heather’s favorite things
By heather | September 24, 2007
I’m not an Oprah wanna-be, nor will you as the audience be getting one of everything on my list. But lately I’ve been saying with alarming regularity “This is the best $XX I’ve ever spent!” so much so that it’s losing its punch.
So after I list these, I get to start over with new things being the best money I’ve ever spent. That’s the way it works. And I was going to search the nets and find pictures, but time is running short and I’m feeling lazy so just click your finger and google it. Honestly, do I have to do everything?
philosophy on a clear day – This stuff transformed my skin over a weekend. A WEEKEND! If you read on Friday how disastrous my skin has been lately (where I also foretold how I was punishing my hair for my skin’s bad behavior) you know that I was in a blind panic, with the new job and all – zits and oil do not inspire confidence because if you can’t manage your skin what the heck is your problem? So I irrationally ran to the mall that is 50 minutes away from my house on Friday, simply because it’s the only place within 70 miles where I can purchase actual live philosophy products and not have to wait for it to be delivered to my house. I needed a FIX, and I wasn’t going to stop until I’d spent some money to better my face. I intended to get the blemish serum, but as soon as I saw the 4-step program sold in a handy little kit with DIRECTIONS, I blacked out and not only bought that but let some orange faced saleswoman sell me beige foundation which I will be returning because it also makes me orange faced.
(Warning, I’m about to digress you can totally skip this part: so as I’m talking to the saleswoman who wasn’t even a philosophy girl, she sold Clinique, she is showing me this foundation and I asked if it came any lighter than beige and she assured me it didn’t. I’m a little skeptical but the fact that I drove so far to get this crap should assure you that I’m in no condition to question anything. Guess what, it does come lighter – as a matter of fact there are 3 whole shades that are lighter than what she sold me. And I discovered when I got home and read the instructions that she hadn’t even put it on correctly. The airbrush foundation or whatever it’s called is a sponge-applicator thingy and you just press the sponge on to your face and the powder comes out through the holes in the lid through the sponge. She actually gobbed the sponge all up by unscrewing the cap and DIPPING it in the makeup. Duh! This product is going back, and I’ll order it online after my bare minerals is gone – in the RIGHT shade TYVM.)
Anyway, no kidding – these products bitch slapped my skin right back into shape and healed the existing zits faster than anything I’ve ever seen. For me, this is close to a miracle. Best $45 I ever spent.
kelty kids backpack – I already talked about how much I love this thing. The Baby Bjorn never did it for me despite the rave reviews about the Bjorn being the best. I did not dig the Bjorn. This not only carries the baby on your back more comfortably and hilarious-er that the front carriers, but when the baby is bigger it has a tiny zip off baby sized backpack that matches your backpack so baby can carry his own crap necessary baby stuff. Best $99 I ever spent.
liquid eyeliner – through the years I’ve gone from pencil to liquid and pencil to liquid and I always wind up back at liquid. With mah skin being a bit oily, it seems to stay on better that pencil and stays put and defines like nothin’ else. My current favorite is Urban Decay’s because they come in awesome colors. Best $18 I ever spent. (I know – $18! – the horror. You can get it cheaper if you aren’t sure, and then it will the the best $7.50 or $2 or hell just use a thin tipped Sharpie. You can’t put a price on quality people.)
legato carpet squares – Because we are aspiring do-it-yourself-well-ers (this means we try real hard to do it ourselves) we opted for the Legato carpet squares. This way if (let’s be optimistic and say juice) juice gets on one or two squares, we just replace them and hooray the carpet is new again! I love them, although Brett probably doesn’t because he is the one cutting ridiculously intricate patterns in these things so they fit snugly around the door, and fireplace and vents. These are $100 per box but we would have spent so much mooore if we had bought wall to wall. Once these are completely down I will proudly proclaim them to be the best $100 (uh, times 11) that we ever spent.
formula dispenser thingy – if you have a baby who drinks formula and you don’t have one of these, then seriously? What the heck are you carrying your powder around in? And it also turns into a snack cup. Best $3.99 I ever spent.
gummi bear vitamins – I just can’t remember to take a pill vitamin. In fact, I think my brain purposely blocks me from remembering because the reptilian part remembers the horrible fish oil capsules I took when I was pregnant, which caused me to burp tuna all day long. But the gummi bear vitamins, I can’t WAIT to eat. In fact Brett has had to yell at me for sitting there eating them like regular old gummi bears, when in fact they are a drug. “They have a Drug Facts label! Stop eating them!” Best $4.50 I ever spent.
Maybe later I’ll post some links to these things. But not right now. There will probably be a part 2 in a few weeks, and then I’ll expend much more effort. Promise. Now go look at the picture of mah hair and tell me if I need highlights again.
