of birthdays and bob barker
By heather | October 2, 2007
As a little kid, I used to love The Price Is Right. I especially loved Bob with his dapper suits, getting knocked over by out-of-control honeys in flowery housedresses trying to kiss him. It was the 80′s equivalent of Jerry Springer. My mom never understood my game show obsession. My grandma did, so we all guessed that was where I got it from.
In college, I met Erin. On a campus of 40,000 people what are the odds that you are going to meet someone who not only shares your love of game shows, but who approaches the day of their birth with same reverence that I take toward mine? On this day, thou shalt bring me flowers, not make me go to work, buy me things, and cater to me all day and even the morning after. If you’ve known me for 5 minutes, you understand and respect. the. birthday.
This year we will both be 32 and I’m happy to say we have not toned down the birthday demands one little bit. As most people get older, they tell themselves it doesn’t matter anymore, and what’s to celebrate about getting old? Erin and I have gone in the opposite direction and upped the ante by buying ourselves something significant to mark each birthday for the last few years.
3 years ago I bought the most kick ass pair of black leather boots ever. I still love them. 2 years ago, when I turned 30, I bought some nice jewelry then went to see Penn State play in the Orange Bowl in Miami. Last year I had a baby. I can’t really top those last two years. I haven’t decided what to get this year. Erin bought herself some Coco Chanel.
Today is Erin’s birthday. Erin has tickets to The Price Is Right. If there is one thing that would make a birthday like no other it would be to play a pricing game with Bob Barker. Since that can’t happen anymore, Drew will have to do, and at least he isn’t Rosie O’Donnell because then TPIR would have been dead to me.
I always wish Erin happy birthday a day late. This year, I want her to know that I am purposely waiting an extra day to help her prolong her own personal national holiday celebration, but that I did think of her and wondered if she was, at this very moment, winning a car.
Anyone can say happy birthday on your ACTUAL birthday. That day is reserved for acquaintences and co-workers and parents. A true kindred birthday spirit like mine understands the letdown of the day after and saves a little somethin’ for ya.
Happy BIRTHDAY baby!
