• Atman

The Atman or Atma (IAST: Ātmā, sanskrit: आत्म‍ ) is a philosophical term used within Hinduism and Vedanta to identify the soul. It is one's true self (hence generally translated into English as 'Self') beyond identification with the phenomenal reality of worldly existence.

    ghoogle

    By heather | October 24, 2007

I have a ghost. Not a haunting ghost that throws things and slams cabinet doors, although Lord knows I probably wouldn’t even notice a few more things on the floor.

I have a Google ghost, or a ghhoogle if you prefer. If you use iGoogle as your home page you know that you can add web parts to it. So my page looks like this:

As an aside, if you don’t have iGoogle as your homepage, damn what are you waiting for? If you are in any way predisposed to having an internet addiction, this will cause you to constantly reload your home page hundreds of times a day to see if someone sent you an email! one of your blogs posted to your reader! the weather has changed!

Anyway, in the bottom left of the homepage I can view my search history. In this picture, which you can click on and make bigger if you are that interested, the search history shows denon (? what ?) gmc acadia, computer power supplies and apcon. I DID NOT DO ANY OF THOSE. In fact at 7:48 this morning, I was in my car listening to entertainment news and wondering why we are still talking about Britney.

What is going on here? I’ve changed passwords and done all the usual stuff. Should I hide the search history and pretend that it isn’t happening to me? Should I foolishly go into the darkened room wearing my underwear and ask "is anyone there?" while the man in the mask breathes behind me? Honestly, this is an embarrasment to me as a computer security guru (I am using guru in the loosest possible sense because now? obviously not so much).

Come to think of it, my ringing endorsement for iGoogle as a homepage maybe doesn’t make so much sense anymore.

Like an insecure high school girl, I’ve iGoogled around and somewhere, somebody has my credentials cached. Or someone is effing with me and doing a dang good job.
