• Atman

The Atman or Atma (IAST: Ātmā, sanskrit: आत्म‍ ) is a philosophical term used within Hinduism and Vedanta to identify the soul. It is one's true self (hence generally translated into English as 'Self') beyond identification with the phenomenal reality of worldly existence.

    good to know

    By heather | January 5, 2008

I stumbled on an article a few days ago about Glassbooth. It’s political matchmaking! This site asks you to give points to a number of issues that are hot election topics. You then take a short quiz, and it tells you which potential candidate most closely aligns with your beliefs, and the issues you hold dear so you’ll know if you’ll be compatible for the next four years.

I love this idea for so many reasons. At this stage in the game, who can really track and research every yahoo who wants to be prez if it isn’t your full time job? Do you have time to decipher the fluff on their websites, compare it with media reports, and then figure out what the person really stands for? Me either, because I tried. And failed. Plus, I tend to make snap judgements and just assume that I am not going to like a particular candidate. This at least gives you a totally bi-partisan start.

I’ve read blogs where the authors are planning to vote for Hillary just because she’s a woman. In my book, that’s as bad as not voting for someone because of gender or race. I wish those authors would go take this quiz, and if they align – goody for you. But if not, you need to do some serious thinking as to why you are choosing a particular candidate.

This quiz takes the glamour away. When you aren’t swayed by what Oprah says or who’s advertising on TV and dropping sound bites, you might be surprised. I liked Obama long before he announced he was running and always despised Hillary. But guess what? Me and Hill are 58% – me and Barack are barely 51% and the things we agree on are not among the issues I ranked most important.

I align most closely with Rudy (78%), which doesn’t surprise me in the least. Mike Huckabee and I agree on most things but are at opposite ends of the spectrum on abortion rights and the environment.

So go take the quiz. If you want to leave a comment and share your most compatible candidate, I’d love to read them. I’m nosy like that and it’s fascinating to me to find out why someone thinks the way they do. I promise I won’t throw stones. Get it? Ye in the glass booth shall not throw…ah forget it.
