• Atman

The Atman or Atma (IAST: Ātmā, sanskrit: आत्म‍ ) is a philosophical term used within Hinduism and Vedanta to identify the soul. It is one's true self (hence generally translated into English as 'Self') beyond identification with the phenomenal reality of worldly existence.

    fishy

    By heather | January 23, 2008

I was emailing back and forth with my friend Megan the other day and happened to mention something about a room we are going to paint that has fish on the walls.

If we had been talking on the phone, there would have been a pause. Her next email asked, delicately, if the fish were like, real fish or cartoon fish.

Ha ha! Not in my house do we choose just ONE kind of fish on our walls…oh no!

The office, soon to be Alex’s room, offers this masterpiece:

    Real fish. And fishing gear.

Also, say hi to my piggy bank from high school, and a crafty photo frame with seashells glued around it and no picture. And yes, that thing on the wall is a 1960′s home intercom system, also known as the bane of my existence in every room we fix up because Brett refuses to get rid of it and patch the hole because one day, we might – just might! – rewire the entire house so that we have a fancy up to date intercom system. Why, yes of course I need one of those in this vast manse in which I reside. It would be undignified to just scream down the steps when I need something.

In case you need a detail of what surely took as much time as the Sistine Chapel:

In the basket are the tools for gutting and frying up that there rainbow trout. Don’t you wish your house could tell you about the previous owners?

Ah the many fantastic looks that can be created with stencils!

When people come to our house for the first time we make sure to take them into this room, especially if they are people we don’t know well. The expressions are priceless, the questions hesitant…”Wow, did you…paint…that?”

Sometimes we show them the bathroom first.

Yep those are cartoon fish swimming randomly on the wall. Notice the orange one is missing his face, from when I got bored sitting on the toilet one day.

You didn’t know fish lived in your windows did you? When you least expect it, they’ll swim out and bite you on the ass.

Just for some contrast, my shower curtain has ducks taking a bubble bath on it.

Finally, the matching border, from which the cutout fish were born spawned:

How have I not been asked to have my house featured in Better Homes and Gardens?

So for your future decorating reference, I noticed the other day that Target has these things that are guaranteed to be the bane of the homeowner’s existence in a few short years – wall decals. Supposedly “easily removable” they are huge and tacky (in the ugly sense, not sticky sense although I guess they are sticky too) graphics that get stuck on your walls.

Let’s do an infomercial: Toss out your messy stencils and brushes! Forego aching arms and back as you paint borders around your ceiling! With wall decals, you don’t need to spend hours and hours decorating! So easy, a 2-year-old can do it!

If you’re so inclined that is. Just be warned, future owners of your house are laughing at you.
