desperation
By heather | October 1, 2008
I return to work in less than a week.
I have been up since 2am trying to either get the baby to sleep or go back to sleep myself.
I have a love/hate relationship with the Babywise book - love it because it worked with Alex who slept through the night at 7 weeks, and HATE HATE HATE IT now for giving me what are obviously unrealistic expectations in it’s stupid sanctimonious tone.
I don’t know what I’m doing wrong.
EK has slept through the night twice so I know she’s capable of it.
Most nights though, she is up at 3:15 or 4 or 2:17 or 5:10. Or 2 and 4 and 6 and on those days I am ready to pass out, fall over, cry, or take up smoking. It is the unpredictability that drives me insane.
If I try to let her cry it out it feels like layer after layer of skin being scraped away by tweezers and usually I give in after an hour anyway. At 4:45 this morning I took a walk outside with my iPod to get the hell away from it.
If you would be so kind, please leave a comment and tell me when your baby(ies) slept through the night and if you did anything to make it happen. I should mention that our days are relatively calm and scheduled - she eats at pretty much the same times every day but is a much fussier baby than Alex was.

I am about to be a terrible nurse and advice giver. But here goes.
Both of my boys slept through the night from the time I brought them home. They were both breast fed (and ravenous eaters), except for a “night night” bottle of formula mixed with rice cereal. About the consistency of honey.
Most doctors and reasonable people will tell you horrible this is. But my boys slept through the night from day one, and have had no ill effects from it.

I think Andrew was about 9-10 weeks. He slept from 10-5 or 6, so that was sleeping through the night for me. I used to give him a little bit of gerber baby oatmeal in his bedtime bottle and that worked pretty good. He also was colicky from 6 weeks to 3 months and was up all night long sometimes. I think it really depends on the baby, but if her tummy can handle it, try some oatmeal.

I have no advice. Must. Still. Leave. Comment.
Rice cereal did it for mine. At 4 months.
Hey, that was kinda advice. Go me.

I am so jealous of honeybell. grrr. My kid finally slept through the night at 5 1/2 months and only after we did some CIO. I followed the Ferber/Weisbluth thing. He probably was ready at 4 or so months but I was chicken. Will not be chicken with next child.

Natalie was sleeping through the night around 3 months… I think you were spoiled with Alex… he was an outlier…

My daughter didn’t start sleeping through the night until about 7 months. We put up with it until about then and then we used the Ferber method. It worked after about 1 week.

Total stranger here.
I think the little sweet/proteiny snack people are suggesting might be the secret. For both mom and baby.
A small bowl of ice cream for you and a little innocuous oatie/rice formula for the kid.
Can it be allergenic? Hell. How would I know?
Good luck and congratulations.
