spring (break) is in the air
By heather | March 3, 2009
Tonight, I was teaching my core strength class at the gym and it occurred to me that the audience was made up of mostly children. I had noticed that the parking lot was packed with cars parked as if the owner had jerked to a stop and ran away, and it seemed a little crowded as I glanced at the treadmills on my way to the locker room.
By now the New Year’s Resolution crowd is starting to lose momentum, succumbing to late winter blahs and promises to really kick it up when the weather gets warmer. It’s too early for the bikini crowd, trying to shape up for summer. Pushing my way through teenagers posing with lipstick shiny lips and itty-bitty shorts talking to boys with faux-hawks I finally realized what time of year it is.
IT’S SPRING BREAK TIME BITCHES!
Ah yes, all the college students who haven’t been affected by the recession because they’re still on the dole from Parents, Inc have dragged their hungover, scrawny asses to the gym for some last ditch efforts to shape up before heading on an all-expenses-paid much needed break from waking up at 10am every day to wander out for coffee before falling back asleep as soon as they settle into the stadium seating in Anthropology 101.
Once I realized why my class was packed, because I was feeling
a) jealous
b) tired
c) not hungover
d) tired of being an adult
e) mean
f) all of the above
I made a special effort to make those 30 minutes as miserable as possible. I drilled them in one-armed push-ups and core balances and resistance exercises with a singular goal of creating a soreness that would last at least until the first tide of Red Bull and vodka washed it clean away.
And I did not feel the tiniest bit of regret.
Things I have learned from writing this post:
a) I am old
b) I am bitter
c) I am STILL in better shape than a bunch of college kids, at least the ones who only come to the gym right before spring break
So there.

You are my hero if you can do one arm push ups. And you totally deserve that jogging stroller. Brett knows it.
